Prince Harry shocked everyone when he released a lengthy rant online about how the press treated his wife, Meghan Markle. As if that’s not enough, a new report revealed that the Duke of Sussex didn’t consult his dad Prince Charles, older brother Prince William, and the Buckingham Palace before launching his attack.
As we all know, the British tabloids spare no one, not even the royal family. It's no secret that not all stories and reports are true; some are fake, and others are exaggerated.
While the royals usually ignore these stories and lies about them, it seems that they finally got on Prince Harry’s nerves. Instead of letting it go and move on, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex decided to fight back by suing the publisher of the Daily Mail on October 1.
As it turns out, Prince Harry didn’t tell anyone close to him about his plan. Prince Charles and Prince William, reportedly, only knew about his outburst after it was already published. The Duke of Sussex didn’t ask any advice from the senior royals and advisers and wrote the letter himself.
As for Queen Elizabeth, it was previously thought that she knew nothing about Prince Harry’s rant. But, then, the Duke of Sussex’ secretary said that Her Majesty was informed about it. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle just ended their successful South African tour, and now people are quickly talking about his rant instead of their trip.
“This is not the done thing on a royal tour when the principals are representing the Queen and country,” a royal source said. “I can’t imagine the Queen will be very impressed.”
A report also noted that Prince Harry’s statement would not change the British press culture. The media is a very competitive world. The juicier the headline and content, the more audience they’ll get.
Unfortunately for the popular people like the royals, stories about them, exaggerated or not, get a lot of attention from people, making them an easy target for the press. “Newspapers were desperately seeking to maximize their readership as much as possible,” Simon Cross, a senior lecturer at Nottingham Trent University, said. “What happened to tabloids’ content was that they became more and more sensational to stay ahead of the curve, sometimes chasing aspects of people’s private lives.”
Meanwhile, ever since Meghan Markle joined the royal family, she’s been bombarded with criticism. Also, the Duchess of Sussex is constantly being compared to Kate Middleton, with the latter being praised all the time.
