There is little doubt that Alita: Battle Angel was one of the most anticipated films of 2019, and although it wasn't a huge commercial success, fans of the manga series immediately embraced the live-action adaptation when it premiered in February.
So, what is happening with the sequel to the Robert Rodriguez cyberpunk flick? Fans who are tired of waiting for an official announcement have decided to start a petition asking for Alita: Battle Angel 2, and it already has more than 73,000 signatures.
There is a good reason why Alita: Battle Angel 2 has not yet been confirmed. After all, the first Alita was the last film to be released by 20th Century Fox before it was acquired by Walt Disney Studios earlier this year. The move to Disney has undoubtedly put a halt on the development of a sequel that has long been planned by producer James Cameron. Nevertheless, fans believe that Cameron and Rodriguez are just waiting to get support from moviegoers who are eager to see how Alita's story will continue.
The petition for Alita: Battle Angel 2 was created back in February, while the first movie was still being shown in theaters. The creator of the petition wanted to make sure that James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez were aware that there is a demand for a sequel.
Interestingly, the petition has now turned into a platform for fans who are understandably concerned that Disney might decide to scrap any plans for Alita's sequels. Amazingly, it is gaining more signatures by the minute as more people discover the petition's existence.
So why is it taking so long for Alita 2 to be confirmed? Rosa Salazar, who played the titular cyborg in the first movie, may have revealed that it has a lot to do with Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox. After all, there are several Fox projects that Disney will get to choose from. Considering that Battle Angel didn't do too well in the box office, it might not be one of the studio's current priorities.
Although Alita 2 has not yet been greenlighted, Rosa Salazar told fans to continue supporting the first movie in an effort to promote its home media sales. The Maze Runner: The Death Cure actress urged supporters to purchase the DVD and stated that she would be more than happy to return as Alita in the future.
