Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been surrounded by a lot of rumors and made-up stories since they became a thing. A lot of people have been questioning the former Hollywood star's union with the Duke of Sussex, but the latter has been defending his wife ever since. Now, the latest in the rumor mill is that their marriage is causing money woes in the royal family.
Although Meghan already moves to the U.K. when she got engaged to Prince Harry in November 2017, she is not yet a British citizen. It will still take years before the Duchess of Sussex officially becomes a British herself, but she has promised she will be compliant with all the immigration requirements needed at all times.
As she is Los-Angeles born, it only means that Meghan is still an American citizen. Hence, she is required to pay her taxes in the US for any income she earns or allowance she receives, and other taxable items like gifts, homes, and even her clothes.
Since Prince Harry is married to Meghan, according to Express, the U.S. tax office can also ask taxation from his income. So, the inheritance he receives from his mother, Princess Diana, and the Queen Mother, and other money he gets can also be subject to American taxation. Their son's, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, income can be taxed as well.
The IRS noted Meghan is obliged to file a U.S. tax return and report any foreign accounts and assets that would be higher than $200,000 (£162,458) and gifts that cost more than $15,797 (£12,831.75), even if it's not yet in her possession. The only way for the former Suits actress to wave off paying U.S. taxes is to renounce her US citizenship when she becomes a British citizen.
However, baby Archie will remain liable for U.S. taxes until he becomes 18-years-old, as he was born in wedlock abroad to an American citizen. When the kid gets old enough, he, too, can renounce his U.S. citizenship to avoid paying American taxes.
Meanwhile, Prince Harry addressed the issues surrounding his wife by getting into the press. He recently shut down some British tabloids for their "ruthless campaign" against Meghan. A royal insider told People the father-of-one is protecting the Horrible Bosses star and is also worried about their son.
In his speech, Prince Harry compared what happened to his mother to what Meghan is experiencing now. "My deepest fear is history repeating itself. I've seen what happens when someone I love is commoditized to the point that they are no longer treated or seen as a real person," he said.
As Prince Harry experienced losing his mother, he is now seeing his wife falling victim "to the same powerful forces." He, then, thanked the public for their continued support to him and Meghan. Although it doesn't look like it, he admitted they badly needed their support now.
