It looks like the fourth Matrix movie is officially happening, and it has just added a new name to its growing lineup. A new report confirms that Aquaman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has just joined the cast of The Matrix 4. But, who will the rising star portray in the highly anticipated sequel? Although there is a possibility that Abdul-Mateen will play a completely new character, there are speculations that he will be introduced as someone who had previously worked with Keanu Reeves' Thomas Anderson.

The casting news comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which confirms that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is in final negotiations to appear in The Matrix 4. The Black Mirror star will be joining returning cast members Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss as well as co-creator and co-director Lana Wachowski in the highly anticipated film. Abdul-Mateen's role in the fourth Matrix movie has not yet been announced. Nevertheless, fans believe he could be playing a young version of Morpheus, the character that was originally played by Laurence Fishburne in the first three movies.

The idea of exploring a young Morpheus' story isn't exactly a new one. After all, this was the premise of a prequel film that was being developed by Zak Penn back in 2017 that was supposed to star Black Panther actor Michael B. Jordan. However, it is still unclear if the project will push through now that The Matrix 4 is officially happening. So far, Penn has confirmed that he is still working on the script, although Jordan has revealed that he has not yet been contacted about working on the movie.

Although the idea of seeing a young Morpheus interacting with Neo and Trinity sounds like a cool one, there is a bigger chance that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has been cast in a completely new role. Some believe that the Get Down star might portray Morpheus' son or a different character who is not connected to any of the humans aboard the Nebuchadnezzar. Hopefully, the mystery role will be revealed when the film finally begins production.

Will Yahya Abdul-Mateen II play the young Morpheus in The Matrix 4? Or could he be the new Chosen One who will help Neo and Trinity defeat the machines? Although the movie has not yet been given an official release date just yet, the fourth Matrix film is already expected to begin production in Chicago, Illinois, in February 2020.
