The fate of the Game of Thrones prequel shows has proven that you either win or die. Although HBO has canceled the first prequel series, a second one has been given the green light. Interestingly, the new show, which is being called House of the Dragon, could be written by A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin himself. However, the novelist also revealed that he wouldn't be involved in the new series until he completes work on the highly anticipated The Winds of Winter.

There is little doubt that The Winds of Winter is probably the most delayed book in popular culture considering that George R.R. Martin's novels have been turned into one of the biggest shows on television. Although the series has already concluded, Martin has yet to finish the follow-up to A Dance with Dragons, which concluded with Jon Snow being stabbed to death and Daenerys Targaryen being captured by the Dothraki. Nevertheless, fans continue to wait for Book 6 in hopes of finding out what will happen to the characters that do not appear in the show. In addition to that, some are hoping that A Song of Ice and Fire will conclude differently from the HBO series.

Although people are still waiting for the sixth book of A Song of Ice and Fire, it looks like a second Game of Thrones series is already in development. George R.R. Martin has confirmed that the prequel show titled House of the Dragon has been greenlighted by HBO and is expected to begin production as soon as possible. The author made the announcement on his blog, sharing some interesting details about the new series.

According to George R.R. Martin, Game of Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik and Colony's Ryan Condor will serve as showrunners for the new series. He also confirmed that House of the Dragon will take place 200 years before the events in A Song of Ice and Fire and will focus on House Targaryen. The series is a loose adaptation of Martin's novel Fire and Blood. In addition to that, Martin admitted that he is interested in writing some of the episodes for the new series.

But could this mean that The Winds of Winter will be delayed again? Martin assures fans that he will finish the sixth book before working on the new episodes for House of the Dragon. Unfortunately, he did not share any updates on when the novel will be released.

The Winds of Winter is expected to be published by Spring 2020.
