The fairytale wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles was witnessed by the whole world in 1981. However, things got messy and complicated after a few years. The reason being was the Prince and Princess of Wales were, reportedly, unhappy.
It was also revealed that the two had affairs outside their marriage. According to Express UK, Prince Charles "reignited" his relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles in 1986. As for Princess Diana, she also started her affair with James Hewitt.
By 1992, the couple decided to end things for good. While divorce was still out of the equation, the Prince and Princess of Wales got separated.
During that year, Princess Diana's infamous statements to royal biographer Andrew Morton sparked a huge commotion among the public and royals. As it happened, the Princess of Wales stated that she's like a "sacrificial lamb" who was led to the altar.
She also claimed that Prince Charles got himself a "virgin."
No word has been heard from Prince Charles since then. In 1995, however, Queen Elizabeth II ordered the two to finally get a divorce. It is only a year after when the divorce was finalized, and Princess Diana got over £17 million.
Sources claimed that the heir apparent never wanted to "publicly criticized" Princess Diana, unlike her. There were also reports then stating that Prince Charles even "instructed" their friends to say nothing about the issue, or about the Princess of Wales.
While Prince Charles did not share anything about Princess Diana, a royal author in 2005 released a book titled, The Firm, claiming that the real "sacrificial lamb" in the marriage was the prince. Per Penny Junor's words, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip's firstborn son was the one who sacrificed a lot of things since then.
Being born as the "Heir Apparent" to the throne means that he cannot choose anything for himself. He had to marry someone to continue the lineage. In short, he did not have the "luxury" of choosing his partner and his career. So, even if he knew that it was a "hopeless marriage," he still did what was expected of him.
Penny Junor further stated that Prince Charles does not have a "strong character." He cannot stand up for himself, the royal author added.
Since he was a kid, he became very careful of his actions and choices. He did not want to fail his parents being they are the heads of the monarchy.
