Queen Elizabeth has been the monarch of England for 66 years and has seen 14 prime ministers in her time on the throne. With that said, it is safe to say that Her Majesty has witnessed everything since the start of her reign, including all the political turmoil.
Now, a royal commentator claims that Queen Elizabeth fears for Britain’s future. Richard Fitzwilliams shared that Her Majesty feels “a great deal of concern.”
“When Prime Minister Boris Johnson goes to the Palace today to have an audience with the Queen before the general election is formally started, I suspect she will feel a great deal of concern about the state of Britain today,” he said.
Richard Fitzwilliams went on to say that Britain’s political catastrophe can be compared to the Suez Canal crisis. “Since she came to the throne in 1952 the only comparable periods of crisis were the Suez crisis, when Britain's duplicity became notorious, in 1956 and the Winter of Discontent when the Labour Prime Minister James Callaghan was defeated at the polls after the country was mired in economic chaos in 1979,” he shared.
The royal commentator, then, claimed that Queen Elizabeth is concerned about what might happen if Labour leader and staunch anti-monarchist Jeremy Corbyn was elected. Richard Fitzwilliams also pointed out that the “toxic” Brexit debate wouldn’t help at all.
“Obviously there is the toxicity that has surrounded the fateful topic of Brexit for over three years and will continue to do so whatever the result of the election,” he said. “Britain is clearly totally divided and the future seems dangerously unpredictable.”
Meanwhile, Queen Elizabeth is not only worried about the whole monarchy, but she is also having trouble within the royal family. Previous reports revealed that Her Majesty removed Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s portrait from Buckingham Palace’s Audience Room to express her disappointment towards their actions.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made some shocking revelations during their interview in Harry & Meghan: An African Journey and it seems that Queen Elizabeth is not too pleased with it. Her Majesty is known for trying to avoid any sort of controversies as much as possible, and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex talking about the British clan and the monarchy may have affected and horrified her.
Queen Elizabeth may have felt that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s move was not royal-like. So, they didn’t deserve to be displayed in the Buckingham Palace — at least not for now.
