Is a 2NE1 reunion possible? BLACKJACKs are wondering whether this will happen with the news of CL's official departure from YG Entertainment.
According to a report by All Kpop, the former 2NE1 leader officially parted ways with YG Entertainment when she opted not to renew her contract with the agency. With this development, only Sandara Park remains with the agency after 2NE1's disbandment in 2016.
It came as no surprise to fans that CL left YG Entertainment. For the past three years, the talented rapper was not able to release a solo album as fans expected. Plans to penetrate the U.S. market with a co-management deal with Universal Music Group also did not pan out. CL was able to participate in the original soundtrack for My Little Pony The Movie, JTBC's MIXNINE and tvN's Livin' the Double Life, but her career lacked any breakthroughs since the disbandment of 2NE1.
2NE1 Reunion?
BLACKJACKs have always held out hope that there will be a reunion among the four members of 2NE1.
However, with Park Bom signed as a solo artist under D-Nation, Minzy still with Music Works and Sandara Park actively involved in activities under YG Entertainment's management, it is unsure whether a reunion will materialize.
CL's decision to leave her agency came at the heels of Minzy's court petition to terminate her contract with Music Works. In her petition, she also demanded 50 million won from her agency. While the details of the petition still being deliberated by the courts, Minzy's future as a solo artist also hangs in the balance.
Fans believe that Minzy may have been frustrated by Music Works after her solo debut in 2017. After her album release, her career remained relatively stagnant. Last year, her only major release was her first English song, All of You Say.
With CL and Minzy's departure from their labels, fans are hoping that Sandara Park will also follow in CL's footsteps and leave YG Entertainment.
However, out of all the members, Dara received the most promotion from the agency with acting projects and variety shows like My Celeb Roommates, Get it Beauty, Radio Star, Relationship Appeal, and Mimi Shop. However, her music engagements were only limited to guestings in G-Dragon's Asian concerts, a fan meeting mini-concert in Manila and a collaboration with Park Bom's song.
For now, it seems the only possibility of a 2NE1 reunion would entail CL and Minzy and joining Park Bom in D-Nation Entertainment. Dara would also need to sign with the company when her contract expires. BLACKJACKs are still hoping for the possibility.
