Gossip Girl has become a "millennial pop culture staple." With the show's cult following and massive success over its course, it is not surprising why the show received a new series order from HBO. As it happened, a reboot of the show from The CW was already confirmed.
According to Refinery 29, there is no doubt about the overall success of the series during its course many years ago. However, many are convinced that the show was quite problematic, especially if people today would start to look back on the overall dynamic of the original Gossip Girl.
Based on statements, there was a huge lacking of cultural representation, specifically, in terms of diversity. Sources also noted that the original setting of the series was not able to capture the real picture of the Upper East Side. Not only that it was "offensive" but, it was also dramatically "inaccurate."
Thankfully, though, one of the original executive producers agreed to these assertions. Joshua Safran, who served as one of the writers and producers of the original series, will be the showrunner of the upcoming Gossip Girl reboot.
In an interview with Vulture, the showrunner acknowledged these claims and assertions made by the fans and viewers. He agreed that there was a huge lack of representation during the first time around.
He also shared that he was the only "gay writer" on the original series at that time. Hence, he fully understands what these complaints are given that he was part of the minority a few years back.
In Gossip Girl reboot, however, Joshua Safran promises to "correct these wrongs." As per his revelations, the leads will be all "non-whites." So, fans can expect more diversity in the cast of the revamped series.
It was also noted that the show will feature more "queer contents." It will certainly mirror how the world looks today, especially in the Upper East Side community.
TV Line also released a similar narrative. As per the publication, the showrunner also teased that the new series will have a "huge twist." Even so, the base dynamic of the reboot will still be similar to the original show.
The core cast was said to still attend the same school, Constance Billard School for Girls. Also, Kristen Bell will still be the voice actor who narrates the series of events, just like what she did in the original.
Furthermore, social media and technology will be more apparent this time around since the new series will happen in the present day.
