Kate Middleton has been one of the most popular fashion icons today. From her choices of clothing styles and accessories, many royal fans cannot help it but idolize the Duchess of Cambridge.

Among all her pieces of jewelry and accessories, her engagement ring has caught the attention of many. With its huge sapphire and diamond embellishments, it is not surprising why it has been attracting people.

However, recent reports claimed that this was not the case many years ago. As it happened, royal experts and commentators deemed the engagement ring as "too common" and standard for a royal.

According to Express UK, the iconic sapphire engagement ring used to be "frowned upon" by the mass. Although the ring used to be Princess Diana's, this did not change the views of the public. In fact, this was even the reason why the ring was perceived as a "commoner's ring."

Back in 1981, Prince Charles decided to pop the question to Princess Diana just after meeting her a couple of times. Despite the fact that he was said to be in love with Camilla Parker-Bowles, the Princess of Wales was deemed as more suitable and appropriate for the future king.

The Prince of Wales asked her hand in marriage. However, no ring was given to her at first. Instead, Prince Charles asked the late princess to choose an engagement ring for herself. This is why many have referred to it as a "disaster" proposal, as per Cheat Sheet.

Several reports noted that engagement rings of the members of the royal family are supposedly "made-to-order." It was the tradition, the sources added. But, since the proposal came as a surprise to everyone, Princess Diana chose a "ready-made" in a catalog. She chose the now-iconic sapphire and diamond engagement ring.

While it was a grand moment for the British royal family, as well as for the royal fans and supporters, critics and experts thought of the ring as too common for this very reason. Even so, times have changed, and the ring is now seen as one of the "most sought" engagement rings in recent times.

It was reported that Prince Harry was the one who chose the ring first after Princess Diana's death. However, he deemed it just appropriate to give the ring to Prince William before he proposed to Kate Middleton.

Upon Kate Middleton's acceptance, the worth and value of the ring "skyrocketed" as per reports. Today, several imitations and similar styles have been also offered on the market.
