Meghan Markle has been in the headlines since she started dating Prince Harry in 2016. In three years as a royal, the wife of Prince Harry has gotten so much negative press that some people cannot help but label her critics as racists.
The Duchess of Sussex's close friends have even called out her critics as "racists bullies" on social media. Meghan's best friend Jessica Mulroney said in a post on Instagram that the "underserved hate and abuse" aimed at the royal is tantamount to racism, even if some of the comments against Prince Harry's wife aren't about her skin color or heritage.
When Meghan guest-edited for British Vogue last September, editor Edward Enninful lashed out at the critics for attacking her. Speaking with The Guardian, Enninful said Meghan was labeled as "left wing" and "divisive" for her choice to feature 15 women of influence but more than those comments, it was the personal attacks that really ticked off the editor.
Royal fans discussed the topic on Quora as well, where someone asked why critics of the Duchess of Sussex are called racists. One commenter said that more often than not, Meghan's critics find fault in the things she does even as other members of the royal family are doing the same things. The tabloid press fills out stories about her more than the other royals, so it's a wonder why the media is obsessive about Meghan Markle.
Among the criticisms that have been sensationalized about Meghan include her penchant for wearing her curly hair straight or for never having a boyfriend who is black. Some say that she has also never talked about racism or defended the black community in the media because she likes to "pretend she is white."
Meghan is actually of mixed race with an African-American mother and a Caucasian father. She is, however, the first royal family member with African-American roots.
Meanwhile, Insider ran a story citing that there is a double standard against Meghan Markle in the press versus what the media writes for Kate Middleton, her sister-in-law, because of her color. Royal commentator Kristen Meinzer pointed out that these criticisms are intended to depict the Duchess of Sussex as "an ignorant, uncouth, and unfit for the aristocracy, much less the royal family."
For instance, when Meghan wore wedge shoes for her visit to South Africa with Prince Harry, the press ran a story that Queen Elizabeth is allegedly not a fan of this style of footwear. However, this same style is also a favorite of Kate's but she wasn't criticized for it.
