The end is finally here for The Man in the High Castle , and the fourth season of the Amazon series gave fans a conclusion that has everyone scratching their heads. Although the show revealed the fate of John Smith and other beloved characters, the future seemed ambiguous in the final season. Luckily, showrunner David Scarpa has offered an explanation of what truly happened in The Man in the High Castle Season 4.
In the final episode of The Man in the High Castle Season 4, Juliana Crain got some information from Helen Smith about a Nazi train that is headed for the Poconos. The train was on its way because the Japanese have finally ended their occupation of North America, which means that it was the perfect time to strike. Juliana worked with the Resistance to ambush the train with a huge explosion that derailed it.
The explosion had several major casualties, including Helen herself, who was traveling with husband and new North American Fuhrer John Smith. However, John manages to escape, but it isn't long before Juliana Crain tracks him down. The death of Helen proves to be too much for John as he decides it was time to put an end to everything. As Juliana watches, John takes his own life after admitting that he could have done something better with his life but decided to resist it in this universe.
The death of John Smith may have been a sign that there were greater things coming. As Juliana Crain returns to the mines, one of her visions has come true. A portal has opened and there were people coming in from an alternate universe. Could this mean that the multiverse no longer exists after The Man in the High Castle Season 4?
Showrunner David Scarpa offered an explanation to Entertainment Weekly, revealing that "the portal is, essentially, open and it is going to remain open." In addition to that, the alt-universe where the Nazis were defeated will end up being the same as the one where the Resistance made it happen.
"In effect, what that means is two worlds have become one," Scarpa said. "There's a doorway from one world into the next, and now people can move freely between them. What does that mean? You have ordinary people, in some interpretations, who have been called to this event, who are moving through the portal, and these two worlds are going to be fused."
It's an epic conclusion to the series that should leave fans to ponder about the future of the people in these fused universes. The Man in the High Castle Season 4 is currently streaming on Amazon.
