As the new season of Netflix's The Crown has been released, there has been a renewed interest in how Princess Diana's character will be played out in the series, particularly about her marriage and relationship with the royal family. This is also why Diana's phone conversation with her good friend, singer George Michael, has resurfaced recently.
The late Princess of Wales had acquired several high-profile friends over the years, and one of them is George Michael. The phone conversation between the two has come into light recently as it revealed Diana's thoughts about the royal family that she became a part of for years.
The conversation reportedly took place while Diana and Charles' divorce is in the process. The Prince and Princess of Wales separated in 1992, and their divorce was finalized in 1996.
Princess Diana opened up to Michael about her failed marriage to Prince Charles. In their conversation, Princes William and Harry's mother called her divorce "grim." She also shared her thoughts about the royal family in which she called them not a very loving and compassionate family.
"Not a very loving, compassionate family, this one I'm leaving," Diana reportedly told Michael.
The "Careless Whisper" singer's phone conversation with Diana was recorded on Michael's answering machine. He gave the tape to his childhood friend, Andros Georgiou, before his death in 2016.
Georgiou previously revealed the content of the conversation to The Sun. In an interview with the publication in 2017, he claimed that Diana revealed to Michael that her marriage to Charles was an arranged one and that she was too young to know what she is getting into. Camilla Parker-Bowles was never mentioned in the conversation, but Diana allegedly told Michael that her husband did not love her as he is in love with someone else.
It can be recalled that Diana revealed in her controversial Panorama interview in 1995 that her marriage to Charles began to crack in 1986 after Prince Harry's birth. The heir to the throne allegedly rekindled his romantic relationship with his former lover Camilla in the same year.
Georgiou said Diana and Michael had a very honest friendship. They even shared a bottle of wine in Kensington Palace. Georgiou said this happened two years before Diana and Charles officially separated. Diana and George Michael first met in the 1989 concert of the latter.
Meanwhile, The Crown has cast actress Emma Corrin as Lady Diana Spencer. The character, however, does not feature in Season 3 as the installment focused on the royal family's life between 1964 and 1977. Princess Diana is expected to highly featured in the upcoming The Crown Season 4.
