Barack and Michelle Obama celebrated 27 years of wedded bliss in October 2019. However, the former couple living in the White House would not have gotten married if not for the former First Lady's persistence.

According to the documentary The Truth About the Obama's Marriage, Barack and Michelle were in love with each other and had a great relationship from the beginning but the former U.S. president did not plan on getting married. Back then, Barack was not the type to believe in the institution of marriage, perhaps owing to the relationship of his parents.

But he and Michelle were very much in love and devoted to each other. He even said that having Michelle in his life was his luckiest break.

It was Michelle, however, who persisted that they make their union official in the eyes of the law and of God. She grew up in a household with parents who've been devoted to each other for years and she also wanted that same decades-long relationship.

Then in 1991, Barack sprung a surprise when he finally proposed to Michelle and presented her with a ring. He even joked that it might shut up Michelle on hinting about having a wedding. They finally exchanged vows in Oct. 26, 1992 and are blessed with two daughters, Malia and Sasha.

According to E! News, Michelle and Barack's relationship was far from perfect and they keep working at it even after nearly three decades of being partners. The former First Lady admitted in Good Morning America that they also went through counseling so that they will be able to learn to talk to each other and live with their differences.

Michelle has sage advice for young couples struggling to keep their marriage together. She said to get help if the relationship needed it.

Today, Michelle and Barack are empty nesters with both their daughters off to college. Since it's now just the two of them in the house, the former First Lady said that she and her husband give each other room to breathe and explore and spend time with other people.

Michelle also admitted that they are rediscovering each other as a couple as they enter a new chapter in their lives. After living in between school events, sports practices and their respective careers, they have finally found the time to remember and relive what have brought them together as a couple.
