Barack and Michelle Obama have been married for 27 years and their relationship is getting stronger. But not known to many, the two almost did not end up together.

Michelle Robinson has doubts about then young lawyer Barack Obama because of two important factors that a woman typically asks the man she would want to spend the rest of her life with. It was revealed that Obama was really broke when he started dating Michelle and he also doesn't believe in marriage.

The former First Couple first met at work when Michelle was assigned as Barack's mentor. At first, she has no plans to date him. Michelle even set him up with a friend but Barack wasn't interested in anybody but his now-wife. The former president previously revealed in O Magazine that the first thing that he fell in love with Michelle is her height and beauty.

He pursued Michelle. The ex-president was a persistent suitor and Michelle eventually gave him a chance. But since she grew up in an average income family, it is understandable that Michelle doesn't want to start an unstable life with Barack.

In addition to Barack's financial status, he also doesn't believe in marriage. Though he is madly in love with Michelle, he doesn't believe that marriage is a necessary and even calling it a "meaningless institution."

Given these two reasons, what made Michelle stay in their relationship? During her speech at the 2008 Democratic National Convention speech, the former First Lady revealed what made her stick at Barack's side even though he is broke at the time and doesn't believe in marriage.

"He talked about the world as it is and the world as it should be. And he said that, all too often, we accept the distance between the two, and we settle for the world as it is, even when it doesn't reflect our values and aspirations," Michelle said.

This meaningful words draw her back to Barack and made her stay until today. As for the issue of marriage, Michelle just keeps on turning up the pressure on him.

Michelle's efforts eventually paid off. Barack surprised her with a wedding proposal after she dropped hints about her wishes to get married.  Apparently, the ex POTUS jokingly told her after he bent on his knees that the only thing that will shut her up is a proposal from him.

The couple shared two children together-Malia and Sasha-in their nearly three decades of romance. The girls lived with them in the White House for eight years during Obama's two terms as U.S. President. Michelle shared a family photo of them on Thanksgiving.
