A key component confirmed to be used on the upcoming Sony PlayStation 5 is a custom solid-state drive (SSD) that will make the game console faster than ever. Surely, there will be a host of upsides that the hardware upgrade will bring, among them a more immersive experience playing game titles with full-motion video (FMV).

While Sony has already stated that the PS5 will debut with a new storage tech, the Japanese company has yet to discuss in public the exact SSD breed that the gaming machine will bring to the fore. The calculated guess is it will be an SSD that will make use of software-defined flash to boost speed.

In doing so, the new tech, which according to Tweak Town was originally designed for enterprise-level cloud services, will open the door for developers to utilize the hardware at an optimal level, and the possibilities for them will be nearly unlimited.

For a clearer perspective, the same report compared the custom SSD, which by the way, will also be used on the Microsoft Xbox Series X to a jailbroken iPhone or a rooted Android device. Developers will gain granular access on the hardware, and the manifestation for end-users is enhanced gaming experience and speed.

The latter will be realized as faster game loading, which certainly is a welcome upgrade for both the PS5 and Xbox platforms.

The PS5, specifically, is already an exciting prospect for game developers, most notably for those deep in the full-motion video (FMV) segment. If true that the device will be packed with a more advanced SSD technology as promise, one immediate benefit is 4K gaming experience, according to PlayStation Lifestyle.

At the very least, 4K on the PS5 can be squeezed to the limit, and that's because of the touted superfast SSD, the report added.

"I think the PlayStation 5 SSD will be great for everybody. Because it just means you can load stuff quicker. People will feel that in terms of the speed of things. For live-action that gives us the opportunity of just being able to do things in 4K, for instance," the report quoted Flavourworks co-founder Jack Attridge as saying.

Flavourworks is the brain behind the FMV title, Erica.

In addition, game developers are anticipating that with the promised new SSD on the PS5, the size of game titles could be reduced considerably, and the same applies to the game patches that will be deployed later.

As mentioned too, load times for nearly all game titles "will never be the same," per the same report.

Sony has indicated that the PlayStation 5 will make a market debut in the holiday season of 2020, meaning the PS5 release date will be December of the same year.
