There is little doubt that most fans believe that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker ended a little abruptly. Although the film managed to answer some truly important questions, people still felt that Star Wars Episode 9 left out too many important details out. Unfortunately, this has left fans dissatisfied with the way the movie concluded. Interestingly, this has led to some people starting a petition begging Disney and Lucasfilm to release the three-hour director's cut by J.J. Abrams.
It's no secret that J.J. Abrams struggled to complete Star Wars Episode 9. The director had even stated that the final film in the Skywalker Saga should have been split into two separate films to fully cover the expansive storyline. However, Disney and Lucasfilm insisted on finishing the sequel trilogy with just one movie. Needless to say, Abrams did everything he could to cram everything into the allowed 143 running time.
Not surprisingly, Star Wars fans were stunned to find out that J.J. Abrams was forced to cut out several scenes from The Rise of Skywalker that could have explained some of the key points in the film. Others were furious that the director's true vision for Star Wars Episode 9 was not fully realized as Disney allegedly "blindsided" Abrams with the final theatrical cut. With that in mind, a new petition was started calling on the studio to release Abrams' three-hour director's cut.
In the petition, it is pointed out that J.J. Abrams had a longer cut of Star Wars Episode 9. Unfortunately, Disney allegedly cut out several crucial scenes to please investors.
The lengthy version of The Rise of Skywalker, which is now being called the "J.J. Cut," reportedly had "more LGBTQ representation, force ghosts, more insight in Rey and Kylo's emotional struggle including a stellar performance by Adam Driver, more nods to other franchise movies, expanded context on crucial scenes such as Han Solo's visit to Kylo as well as Rey killing Kylo/ healing Rey, justified knights of Ren, Force sensitive Finn, and a much more satisfying and mind-blowing ending."
For now, it is unclear whether Disney will pay attention to the petition. However, people are hopeful that the Star Wars Episode 9 DVD or Blu-ray will feature some of the deleted scenes that J.J. Abrams had wanted to include in the movie. On the other hand, fans who are hoping to sign the petition for the Rise of Skywalker director's cut can do so here.
