Melania Trump may lack experience in public service, but she is all ready to help her husband, Donald Trump, lead the United States. She reportedly speaks four other languages, although some question the authenticity of it. As the First Lady of the United States is said to be multilingual, is there any truth about it?
According to CBS, the former model is fluent of five languages; English, French, Serbian, German, and of course, her native Slovenian. However, there is no proof that she speaks French, Serbian, and German fluently compared to English and Slovenian.
According to Political Flare, there are no records that Melania Trump speaks these languages. Although it may be true that she studies these dialects, it is far different from what she claims she is fluent in speaking those.
In the series of videos that the publication collated, it proved that her claim to be fluent in other languages was questionable. In a video where she met Pope Francis, who was speaking Italian at the time, she had to look to the translator to understand what he was saying.
In another clip where she was visiting a children's hospital in Rome, there were reports she spoke Italian with the kids, but she only said Ciao, which seemed to be a word everyone knew. When Melania Trump visited another hospice clinic in France, she reportedly spoke French. Still, all she said was "Bonjour, Je m'appelle Melania," which meant "Hello, my name is Melania."
In addition, at the G-7 last year, the FLOTUS also donned translation headphones when French President Emmanuel Macron delivered his speech. If she was, indeed, fluent in French, she might never need to listen to the translation.
Anyhow, since Melania Trump is from Slovenia, it may be true that she speaks fluent Slovenian and Serbo-Croatian as those are the national languages of her homeland. However, her claim about her fluency in other languages remains a big question.
Melania Trump has been known for being reserved and a mysterious First Lady. Compared to other wives of the previous presidents, who worked on national projects and took some role at the White House, she kept herself out of it, per Elite Daily.
However, she did launch her initiative, called "Be Best," to fight against cyberbullying and opioid abuse among children. It remains to be seen if her linguistic prowess will be of an advantage at international gatherings and diplomatic meetings. However, it looks like Donald Trump is still fond of using English as the country's primary language.
