Halsey is now reaping the fruits of her hard labor in the music industry. But, before she won the recognition of critics and her colleagues, the singer went through difficult times from her teenage years up to the time she was trying to build her own brand as a musician.

In a 2016 interview with the Rolling Stone, Halsey opened up about her difficult teenage years. She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, tried to commit suicide, and struggled to find her own identity.

The "Without Me" hitmaker revealed that, during her high school days, she was known as the "weird girl" because she is artistic and timid, and always in the art room. However, she quickly became "the slut" in school because of an incident that changed everything for her.

Halsey confessed that, when she was in high school, she took a topless photo of herself for her boyfriend. The photo was stolen from her locker and everyone saw it when the thief passed it around the school. From then on, Halsey said she learned to embrace her sexuality and not intimidated by haters or the media who define her as "bisexual."

"The funniest thing is that the biggest battle that I've had to overcome in my career was not being bisexual, was not being biracial, was not being bipolar. It was everybody thinking that I was exploiting those things," she said.

Halsey, born as Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, is biracial. Her mother is of Italian, Hungarian, and Irish descent. Her father, on the other hand, is African-American with some Irish ancestry.

In another interview with the Rolling Stone, the "Now Or Never" singer also revealed she got pregnant during one of her tours and had a miscarriage in her hotel room before she went on stage for the Vevo LIFT show. She revealed that an adult diaper and two Percocet helped her get through the night.

She, however, told Paper in 2017 that she wished she'd never opened up about it because of how people received her confession. Halsey revealed that, during a show in Canada, there were people who came and held up some bloody baby dolls in the crowd.

Nonetheless, Halsey still thinks that artists should talk about the truth and what they are passionate about. She believed that every artist has their own story and that she is proud of her own story and the journey she took to make it happen.

Now, Halsey has created her own "brand" which she had been telling her mother when she was young. The singer recalled that when she dropped out of community college, her mother told her that her life has no meaning and she was just living in a fantasy world on the internet. But, Halsey never backs down and explained to her mother that she was building her "brand."

Halsey now has a No. 1 album, "Hopeless Fountain Kingdom," and a couple of Grammy noms under her name. She also collaborated with chart-topping artists such as Justin Bieber, The Chainsmokers, and BTS.
