WARNING: This article may contain spoilers for Emergence season 1 finale. Read at your own risk.

Emergence concluded its first season on Tuesday, Jan. 28, on ABC. The freshman series has left a few storylines unanswered, though there are still other stories worth-explaining. The future of the Allison Tolman-led series is uncertain for now, considering season 1 has just ended. But the question is: will the network renew or cancel Emergence season 2?

Currently, ABC hasn't made any official announcement about Emergence season 2. According to CarterMatt, the network won't likely release any detail about it until around April or May. It's worth noting that they considered the episode as the season finale, not a series finale. So, many believe the series would be renewed rather than being canceled.

However, when it comes to the ratings, the future of Emergence season 2 is a bit uncertain. The ratings, reportedly, declined throughout the season. The previous episode garnered 2 million live viewers for the first time and a 0.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic. These numbers are considered less than the average of 0.5 in the demo and 2.8 million viewers.

The ratings have, reportedly, declined over the past weeks, making the future of the series questionable. Still, some of the loyal viewers are hoping they would be seeing Emergence season 2 on ABC since there are still more stories to tell. The only good thing here is that the series pulled in more viewers through DVR or streaming.

Moreover, the season 1 finale ended with some sort of a cliffhanger, hinting the series is open to telling more stories. Although it left a few storylines unanswered, that doesn't mean the show is already done. Jo and Brooks' chemistry was well-received by viewers and other characters' stories are worth-exploring as well in Emergence season 2.

As for what happened in the recently-aired finale, Jo and Brooks tried to get off the Plum Island facility. Good thing, Piper, Chris, Alex, and Benny arrived and they managed to seek refuge in a biocontainment lab. The bad news is that Benny was a casualty even though the team tried their best to block Helen. Jo then used the ability-tranquilizing bracelets on Helen and it knocked her out.

The major twist in the closing minutes is that it was revealed Loretta, Michael Denman, The DoJ agent are the true villain -- they're the ones responsible for the upload. They searched for Helen at the Plum facility island and Loretta pulled out a controller to wake Helen up. It seems like the test worked, as Piper also wakes up at Jo's house.
