The ability of electric-powered cars to compete with established brands in the fast car segments is up in the air. Tesla plans to prove that hybrid plugins can also do fairly well. In fact, the Tesla Model S Plaid has been tasked to prove that point.
The Tesla Model S Plaid was created to challenge the Porsche Taycan Nurburgring's lap time. Though how well the Tesla vehicle can clock remains unofficially. There are some who bat that the Tesla Model S Plaid clocked 7 minutes and 13 seconds, 29-seconds better than the Taycan, Auto Motor und Sportt reported.
But of course, most want to see how the Tesla Model S Plaid in action and with an official time. That could happen as early as next week with Motor Trend conducting the testing of the two vehicles. While most probably know the Porsche Taycan in detail, the same cannot be said for the Tesla Model S Plaid. Tesla CEO Elon Musk did say that the Plaid versions of the Tesla Model X and S will be available to buyers. It will be the Model S starting production by November 2020 with the Model X following at a later date.
The showdown should be interesting. The Tesla Model S Plaid does come with oversized rubber tires and a bigger battery. These should help in giving onlookers an idea of how the Tesla vehicle will perform. But of course, most are expecting further enhancements, things which could be divulged before or after the test.
For those unaware of what to expect from the Tesla Model S Plaid, here are some of the speculations. One is that it will be sport a slightly different look. It will also run on three motors and be track-capable. Musk claims that the Plaid model can bust a 400-mile driving range, making it even more interesting.
Like most racing cars, expect it to be priced heftily. However, the good news is that it will be cheaper compared to getting a Porsche Taycan Turbo. The Taycan Turbo cost roughly $150,000 before options, Teslarati points out.
“It’s incredible, especially the new one with variable damping suspension, hospital operating room HEPA filter for air purification, the raven powertrain. It’s the fastest car in the world, and it’s just so easy to drive. It makes you feel like Superman driving that car. It’s incredibly safe. It’s just an amazing vehicle,” Musk said.
