Apple has been known to take the conservative route, a reason why critics feel they are lagging in technology breakthrough. Despite that, the good news is that the Cupertino company is not ignoring developments. That includes the shift to foldable displays that some mobile devices are now using.
It would be best to note that it is not easy to come up with a device that features a foldable display. There are multiple things to consider, such as the creases which could affect the display visibility. There is no telling if this issue was factored in after sightings of a new patent surfaced over at the United States Patent and Trademark Office recently.
Titled "Electronic devices with flexible displays and hinges", Apple seems to be working on a device that will feature a foldable display within a foldable housing, Apple Insider reported. The display can be foldable in half without compromising the mobile device's screen.
Apparently, the suggested patent makes sure that the display is bent in the right way, with the middle section bowing slightly outward before making the curve around. This should help main sections and edges of the display away from the curved area so they can meet up as close as they can. A certain hinge mechanism was also indicated to render support to the mobile device's housing properly. The hinge mechanism will rotate the elements of the housing around the section where the bend is located, keeping the device appearing neat and tidy.
Before getting too excited, it would be best to note that Apple has been known to file multiple patents in the past. It does not guarantee that a future product or service is in the works and could be nothing more than a concept. Hence, it would be best to take all these lightly for now.
Additionally, Apple has also teased some flexible display ideas in the past. Back in 2018, it filed a similar patent, which explained how different elements could assist in the folding of a device.
For now, it seems that the current crop of foldable phones can heave a sigh of relief. Several mobile phone companies are offering such handsets. Among the notable ones include the Samsung Galaxy Fold, Huawei Mate X, and the Oppo Foldable Phone. These are just some of the best brands consumers may consider in the market. However, it remains to be seen if the viability of making improvements from here is feasible considering costs and pricing for a single foldable handset.
