Ray Donovan season 8 is not happening on Showtime as the network officially canceled the series. Many were shocked and disappointed with the news since the Liev Schreiber-led series didn't have a proper send-off and tie all the loose ends in the show.

The live ratings in season 7 were down compared to the sixth installment, which is possibly one of the main reasons why Ray Donovan season 8 has been canceled. While it's a well-known premium-cable entity, the overall buzz around the series wasn't what it used to be.

Showtime released a statement about the decision to cancel Ray Donovan season 8. The network said they're proud "the series ended amid such strong viewership and on such a powerful note." They also thanked Schreiber, Jon Voight, showrunner David Hollander, and the entire cast and crew for their dedicated work.

However, it looks like the cast and crew are interested to give the series a proper ending. In an interview with Vulture, Hollander, who was still shocked by the cancelation of Ray Donovan season 8, discussed the possibility of another network or streaming platform picking the show up.

The showrunner admits Ray Donovan is a big show and the move to New York was extraordinarily expensive. So, there is a risk in continuing the series, particularly in terms of financial matters. Right now, however, CarterMatt noted it feels unlikely the series will happen elsewhere.

The show is already deep into its run, so other networks or platforms may not be interested in picking it up. The options are limited due to the language and violence in most of the episodes. It also feels impossible Netflix would pick it up as the streaming giant cancels more shows rather than renewing them.

When asked how he broke the news to the cast members, Hollander said he talked to everybody after he spoke to Showtime. He revealed the responses range from being sad and grateful to anger and confusion. Despite the rollercoaster emotions, the network still chose to cancel the series.

Also, Hollander already has an idea of what will happen on Ray Donovan season 8 if ever renewed. He revealed there were two stories to be told: what happened then and how will that impact the present. The series will explore what happened with Ray and Mickey in the '90s, and the creation of Ray Donovan as a character and as a fixer.

Ray Donovan season 7 sees the titular character going to therapy, his father Mickey getting into more trouble, his brother Terry struggling with suicidal thoughts, and his daughter Bridget cheating on her husband. These stories weren't given a proper conclusion, so loyal viewers believe still has more stories to tell.
