Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip got married in 1947. She was only 21-years-old, while the now-retired royal was 26. Through ups and downs, the royal couple has remained strong together.

In November of 2019, they celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary. While it is truly a huge milestone in both of their lives, they recently celebrated a much more significant milestone, not only of their lives but, to the lives of everyone in the United Kingdom.

According to Express UK, the Queen and the Prince Consort just recently honored a "special anniversary." On February 6, the day marked Queen Elizabeth II's "accession to the throne," which unofficially happened in 1952.

It was said that she is now the longest-reigning monarch in British history and the "fifth longest-serving monarch of all time." Having to serve for 68 years, she is now two years away from celebrating her platinum jubilee as the Queen of the United Kingdom.

This is a huge milestone in the life of Prince Charles' mother. However, this also comes with a sad celebration. As it happened, the day also marked King George VI's death in 1952.

Queen Elizabeth II's ascension was the aftermath of her father's death due to coronary thrombosis. He was just aged 56 when he died on his sleep.

Accordingly, the celebration of the Queen's ascension has been much more inclined to the said "tragic" incident rather than her rise to the throne. This is why she always extends her Christmas break in Sandringham Estate up to the first week of February to honor the death anniversary of his father.

The publication also revealed some details on how the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh learned about the unfortunate event in 1952. Based on the reports, the then-young royal couple was on their tour in Kenya.

It was noted that Prince Philip was the one who first learned about the news. Commander Michael Parker revealed that the Prince "looked" as if "half of the world" had dropped on him. He was reported to be with the couple during that time.

Reports further shared that the Duke took the now-Queen Elizabeth II to the garden. This is where he then told her about King George VI's death.

New Idea also released a similar report about the matter. The magazine shared that the Queen honored the 68th death anniversary of her father with Prince Philip in Sandringham. But, after the day, the monarch was revealed to be back in Buckingham Palace leaving the retired Prince Consort at the estate in Norfolk.
