The previous episode of Better Call Saul season 5, which aired on Monday night, Mar. 2, marked the big return of Dean Norris' Hank Schrader. Many were delighted to see this beloved Breaking Bad character, and his appearance might be important in the spin-off.
Speaking to TVLine, showrunner Peter Gould explained why they decided to bring Hank in Better Call Saul season 5. They have been waiting for the right time to bring the character on board, and Gould explained this season is the right time for that.
He said they felt like the fifth installment is the right moment to include a DEA in the story. Thus, bringing a DEA in Albuquerque means bringing back two guys known in the flagship show. That's when they made the decision to bring Norris' Hank, alongside Steven Michael Quezada's Steven Gomez.
Gould also said that Norris and Quezada's appearance in Better Call Saul season 5 isn't just a "pop-in" cameo. The two will be playing prominent roles in the recently released episode 3 and upcoming episode 4. The showrunner a cameo is one thing they've never been interested in doing.
Many were happy seeing these two characters, especially since they played a significant role in the Breaking Bad era. Gould noted that Hank and Gomez will be playing an important role in the fourth episode, with both of them doing some actions.
As for what else we can expect in Better Call Saul season 5, next week's episode will also see Kim Wexler in a conflicting situation. She starts to recognize that her relationship with Jimmy is bringing the absolute worst within her. In addition, Jimmy also doubles down on Saul Goodman.
Kim is doing and saying things that she wouldn't typically, likely because she's constantly around Jimmy. Although she is a strong person, she still has her own flaws. She is also subjected to a little bit of peer pressure, and that Jimmy influenced her life in a big way.
As for Mike, he will try to smooth things over with his family. He is going through an identity crisis as of the moment. It's also apparent that what happened to him at the end of the previous season is still sticking with him and he's changing.
Better Call Saul season 5 drops its new episodes every Monday night on AMC.
