Selena Gomez has revealed in her new album Rare her inner thoughts and experiences about love and heartbreaks. She has moved on and has been focusing on something else than finding new love.
Gomez dropped her latest album, Rare, earlier this year. One of the songs in the album is also titled "Rare" and in it, she opened up about her experiences being in a manipulative relationship.
In an earlier interview with Genius, Gomez talked about the story behind the lyrics of "Rare." She said it is about someone who manipulates his partner and doesn't know how to appreciate the value of his partner.
"There's this satisfaction out of hurting someone because you know that they care. Purposefully putting someone down because you want to keep them at a level. I've had someone actually say that to me before...I just think it's a bit manipulative" she said.
Gomez had been in a number of highly publicized relationships in the past. She dated Nick Jonas and The Weekend but her most controversial romance of all was her on-and-off relationship with Justin Bieber.
Many believed that Selena is talking about Justin in her song "Rare" and also in "Lose You to Love Me," off from the same album. The "Hands To Myself" songstress previously talked about the songwriting process of "Lose You to Love Me."
In an interview with NPR, Gomez said it was healing for her. Selena said in writing the song, she's able to make sense of the fact that she was a "victim to certain abuse." When Taylor Swift's best friend was asked if she was referring to "emotional abuse," Gomez confirmed that she was.
In September 2019, Bieber admitted in a lengthy post on Instagram that he had not been great to his past girlfriends. He confessed that he was resentful and disrespectful to women and "abused all of [his] relationships" in the past.
Now, Gomez is happy with her new album and felt relieved that she can finally close the chapter of her life that involved Bieber. She is now focusing on her mental health and her music and is not actively seeking a new love.
A source told Us Weekly that the "Bad Liar" singer is still healing from her past relationships but more aware now on what kind of guy she would like to hang out with. Apparently, when Selena would seek new love, she would like to have a "real and mature" relationship with a man who is "very secure in himself."
