If you're a Tesla owner but your garage door is not Homelink-compatible, your woes will soon be over. CEO Elon Musk has confirmed via Twitter that its EVs will soon enable WiFi integration to help drivers open their smart garage doors.

One follower of the Tesla and SpaceX CEO asked if it was possible that an icon for a WiFi garage door opening feature could be added to the infotainment system, which would allow owners to enter their garage even without Homelink. Musk was quick to confirm that the feature would be "coming soon."

Homelink's system allows smart integration of up to three devices including lights, gates, security systems, and garage doors. However, it does not use an internet connection but operates on radio frequencies instead. While it is widely used in the US, some garage doors aren't compatible with the system. But if your garage door is WiFi capable, you can use other options.

While technology has paved the way for mobile devices to be used in controlling smart home equipment, it's not as convenient as Homelink, which can detect a vehicle linked to it at varying distances. For one, you don't have to pull out your smartphone just to open your garage door. These days, an "auto open" feature is much more preferable.

If you don't use Homelink and own a Tesla car, you can soon enjoy its new WiFi integrated opening system with its automatic feature. It offers ease of access and eliminates the need of having to invest in a brand-new system just to have your garage door open.

Musk's reply on Twitter is enough confirmation that the feature will soon arrive, but without an official announcement from Tesla, we're left guessing when or how it will be rolled out. Last month, however, he again reiterated the idea of developing smart home technologies.

The CEO previously said that he's interested in developing HVAC systems for residential use that uses HEPA filters that would offer homeowners reduced energy usage and clean air. It's possible that the company's automatic garage door opening feature could be added to Musk's Smart Home idea, though upgrading Tesla cars' infotainment system is a good guess as well.

The auto-open feature could be added via over-the-air updates, who knows. Clearly, Tesla's unique strategy would come in handy for such a feature. And there is a good chance the update would come free of charge too.
