Showrunner Peter Gould discussed to The Hollywood Reporter about Kim's change, noting she wants to feel that she isn't a passenger. The character wanted to feel and know that she's the captain of her own ship. Kim also has pride in herself, as well as in her ability -- she can take care of herself and make her own decisions. Gould also explained the character doesn't want to be played as she wants to be the player.
