After Prince Harry and Meghan Markle moved to Los Angeles, they are now helping its people through their charity work during the COVID-19 outbreak. As the Duchess of Sussex is now being known for her philanthropic works, a source revealed it was inspired by her mom, Doria Ragland, as they used to have little when she was a child.
"Meghan didn't have much when she was a child, but her mom made sure they always gave back," an insider told People. The former's actress' mother used to be a social worker. She is said to be the one who told her daughter to volunteer for Project Angel Food, a non-profit organization that "cooks, prepares, and delivers" meal to people in need.
Project Angel Food's executive Richard Ayoub revealed that before Prince Harry and Meghan Markle joined the cause, the latter was talking to Doria Ragland and telling her plan to give back on Easter. Here, Doria told her about the said foundation, which needed help at the time. The next thing we know, the Sussexes are on the street, delivering food to the sick and most vulnerable.
Meghan Markle has been open about her past, her modest upbringing, and how it influenced her to help others. On her now-defunct lifestyle blog, The Tig, she revealed that her mother raised her to be a global citizen, who saw the harsh realities of the world with eyes wide open.
She remembered when they visited the slums of Jamaica at 10 years old. She never saw that kind of poverty before, so it made a mark on her. Doria Ragland told her at the time to be aware but never to be afraid.
Meghan Markle went on to say that both her parents came from little, so they wanted to give a lot to others. They used to buy turkeys for homeless shelters at Thanksgiving, delivering meals to patients in hospitals, donate spare money to those who needed it, and give a huge smile, hug, or pat on the back to show compassion.
"This is what I grew up seeing, so that is what I grew up being," she said. She saw herself as a young adult with the right social consciousness to do what she could and speak if she knew something was not right.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle recently moved to Los Angeles after stepping down as senior royals. Weeks after their relocation, the public saw them for the first time, delivering food in West Hollywood, LA Eater noted. With the work they do, Richard Ayoub said they loved having them in their country, being the "most-down-to-earth people."
