It has been nine years since Prince William and Kate Middleton wowed everyone with their fairytale-like royal wedding. It was one of the most highly-anticipated royal weddings in decades, but it seemed like the Duke of Cambridge broke some royal traditions to follow his heart.
Before their official wedding on April 29, 2011, the Duke of Cambridge chose his younger brother, Prince Harry, to be his best man, which broke the royal tradition. In the royal family, the man who is with the groom on the day of his wedding is usually called "supporters" and not the best man.
According to The Times, Prince William decided to use the term "best man" as it had "more relevance to his life" than the word "supporters." So, the Duke of Sussex returned the favor when he tied the knot with Meghan Markle in 2018.
Differently, their father followed the royal tradition when he got married to Princess Diana in 1981. He had his younger brothers, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, as his supporters, while the Earl of Wessex also named his older brothers his supporters on his wedding day with Sophie, Countess of Wessex, in 1999.
In addition, Prince William made one final walkout as a single man when he greeted the crowd waiting on The Mall with Prince Harry, Hello! Magazine noted. They also had a private dinner with Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, at the Clarence House that night.
Meanwhile, to celebrate their ninth wedding anniversary despite the lockdown, Prince William and Kate Middleton shared a photo of their wedding. In the snap, the two were all smiles as they stood in the doorway of Westminster Abbey after the ceremony.
Prince Harry and Pippa Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge's maid of honor, could also be seen in the background as they all made their way out of the cathedral. The Cambridges' thanked their fans and followers, who extended their well-wishes as they celebrated their anniversary.
"Nine years ago today," the caption read. "Thank you for all your lovely messages on The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's wedding anniversary!"
It can't be denied that Prince William and Kate Middleton's relationship remain strong from the time they started to be a thing until today. Now, they are both championing their own causes, facing the challenges that come their way as they prepare for their future as king and queen consort.
They are now blessed with three kids, Prince George, 6, Princess Charlotte, 4, and Prince Louis, 2. Prince William and Kate Middleton celebrated their ninth wedding anniversary in private at their Norfolk home in Anmer Hall.
