Fox has yet to officially announce the renewal status of Prodigal Son season 2. The season 1 finale has just recently concluded and it brings more stories moving forward. While the decision is still up to the network, many were still optimistic about the future of the Tom Payne-led series.

The renewal or cancelation of several shows usually announced in the middle of May, thus Fox may do the same in announcing Prodigal Son season 2 renewal status. But due to the current health crisis around the world, things could probably change.

CarterMatt noted that just like other shows that have been delayed because of the COVID-19 outbreak, the renewal decisions could also be the same. Viewers may need to wait for a while before getting an official confirmation regarding Prodigal Son season 2.

In terms of ratings, the series is, reportedly, averaging a 0.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic. Although the show wasn't classified as a runaway hit, it's still a solid performer with devoted fans, as well as steady audiences. This could be enough to continue delivering more episodes in the future.

The familiar faces also help the series generating more viewers each week. Some of the notable faces here include Tom Payne, Bellamy Young, Lou Diamond Phillips, and Michael Sheen. And apart from that, the premise of the show is also interesting.

Speaking to Deadline, creators and showrunners Chris Fedak and Sam Sklaver discussed the potential Prodigal Son season 2. When asked whether or not the series has been renewed, Fedak responded: "We're cautiously optimistic."

As for the stories moving forward, there's a question about Gil's (Phillips) fate as he was stabbed in the finale. Fedak said this story will continue in Prodigal Son season 2, while Sklaver noted it's a "major thing" that they're going to have to deal with.

In addition, the season 1 finale, titled "Like Father...", continues following Bright (Payne) as the mystery of the girl in the box comes to a head. Nicholas Endicott (Dermot Mulroney) has finally shown his true colors and the Whitlys need to decide what they should do to take him down.

The episode saw Ainsley (Halston Sage) ultimately killing Nicholas. Sklaver explained that was the ending they're building to and had it in the pitch for Fox when they sold the show. While Bright is the center of the series, they also explored other characters' stories.

According to Fedak, Ainsley looked like she's normal and wasn't affected by her father's doing because she was just five back then. But at that age, there's a forming memory that could be part of her for the rest of her life and that could be one of the things that will be further explored.
