Microsoft seems to have a full plate as it tries to address issues surrounding their past devices. Most may have heard of the unexplained shutdown plaguing the Microsoft Surface Pro 7, something that has yet to get a fix. Now, a new issue has cropped up. Some Surface Laptop 3 devices are suffering from mysteriously cracked displays and now the Redmond company has been placed in a precarious spot.

However, it appears that Microsoft has identified the problem. In a report from ZDNet, the company is pointing to a hard foreign particle as the cause of the hairline fracture on Surface Laptop 3 screens. But the good news is that owners don't have to worry about spending extra for repairs. Microsoft will be repairing devices for free for as long as it falls under the criteria that they have set.

The free fix for Surface Laptop 3 devices will be given to units that are still under warranty. Folks who may have had it fixed can also get their money back through a special reimbursement. Owners who fall under these categories are urged to contact Microsoft Support to know their next steps.

A proper evaluation is likely to be done on Surface Laptop 3 machines. Should it be proven that the damage was caused by other means such as dropping, the device will not be repaired for free. The device is only half-a-year old, meaning it is still under warranty.

Further, the cracked display problem is more likely to occur on devices with aluminum shells than Alcanatar-covered units. Considered one of the expensive laptops consumers can get to the date, the free repair would be a welcome reprieve. Also worth considering is that Surface devices are pretty hard to repair, likely something that would burn one's pockets.

The latest issue linked to Microsoft Surface devices somehow spoils the debut of recent devices. As mentioned in a previous post, the company had just unveiled the Microsoft Surface Book 3 alongside the budget-friendly Surface Go 2. So far, no issues have been reported and most are hoping that they do not follow the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 and the Surface Laptop 3.

As for the random shutdown problem of the Surface Pro 7, a fix has yet to be released. Some are growing weary of the wait but are hoping it will be the next issue that Microsoft addresses after the cracking display issues of the Surface Laptop 3. So far, no target date has been mentioned.
