Netflix hasn't yet officially renew or cancel The Last Kingdom season 5 as of this writing. But despite the uncertainties, there's still hope for the Alexander Dreymon-led series. The show has a huge global audience and the ending of the previous season sets up new stories in the future.
The decision to renew The Last Kingdom season 5 is all up to Netflix. The streaming platform decides whether or not to continue the series moving forward. One of the major concerns here is that it tends to cancel some shows so suddenly, even the ones in the middle of the run.
Netflix is considering a lot of factors when renewing a series, including the ratings and engagement. The streaming platform wants to make sure there's a demand for new episodes. That means viewers need to check the series as soon as it arrived.
Executive producer Nigel Marchant has something to say when it comes to the renewal of the series. Speaking to Radio Times, he said they're hopeful and would love to do the fifth installment. All of them wanted to tell a complete story throughout different seasons, which is always satisfying.
As for the story of the potential The Last Kingdom season 5, Marchant said they want to tell a story of these separate kingdoms coming together. It would be interesting to see how such unions would happen, as well as how Uhtred gets back to Bebbanburg.
In addition, one of the biggest cliffhangers in season 4 finale is whether or not Aelswith survives her poisoning at the hands of Aethelhelm. Her fate is hanging up in the air at the moment; there's a chance she may or may not coming back down the road.
There are also a lot of stories to tell when it comes to Uhtred's children: Young Uhtred and Stiorra. The Last Kingdom season 5 may also feature a potential battle between Uhtred and Brida. At the end of season 4, the latter felt betrayed and decided to raise her unborn child to hate Uhtred.
The Last Kingdom is based on Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Stories series of novels. The fourth installment tacked seventh and eighth installments: The Pagan Lord and The Empty Throne. The fifth season is likely based on Warriors of the Storm and The Flame Bearer.
As for the possible release date of The Last Kingdom season 5, the series doesn't have a particular release date schedule because of expensive productions and exchanging companies. But, the new installment may likely arrive in October 2021. However, some things may still change due to the global health crisis.
