The royal family is often surrounded by controversies. Amid the glitz and glamour, they all become controversial for different reasons. Take a look back at the hullabaloos that plagued the monarchy from the late Princess Diana to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Princess Diana
The controversy about the royal family will never be complete without Princess Diana on the list. She has been controversial for different reasons, from the time she married Prince Harry to their contentious divorce.
But, what controversy she got into that shook the monarchy to its very core? It was when it was revealed that she had a years-long fling with the British actor James Gilbey, or better known as Jack Woodman from EastEnders. According to Mirror Online, the controversy was called "Squiddygate" due to the cute nicknames they had for each other.
Sarah Ferguson
Sarah Ferguson, famously known as Fergie, is known to be close to Princess Diana. They were both married to Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip's sons. She got married to Prince Andrew in 1986.
However, six years after their royal wedding, a huge scandal emerged. Paparazzi photographers captured a photo of the Duchess of York on vacation with an American financial advisor named John Bryan. In one of the snaps, Bryan was caught licking Fergie's foot, and it ended up on a newspaper's front page. She and Prince Andrew got separated in 1992 and divorced in 1996--the same year as Princess Diana and Prince Charles parted ways.
Prince Andrew
Prince Andrew also has his own skeletons in the closet when his photo with a young girl named Virginia Roberts emerged. The Duke of York's friendship with the late Jeffrey Epstein was also put into scrutiny, Insider noted.
Roberts accused the American financier of forcing her to sleep with the prince when she was only 17 years old in 2001. This also brought a 2015 defamation case to light again. His car-crash interview on BBC Newsnight also turned controversial, resulting in his decision to step back from his royal duties.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle dropped their bombshell announcement at the beginning of the year, it turned out to be the biggest controversy that the royal family faced so far. The couple decided to step down as senior royals, earn independently, be private citizens, and move to Canada, although they are now in Los Angeles.
This move reminds everyone of Edward VIII's abdication from the throne to marry the American socialite Wallis Simpson. Prince Harry bravely decided to leave his royal family and remove his HRH title to live a more private life with Meghan Markle and their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, in a different country.
