At this point, you'd be left wondering why a certain app doesn't have a dark mode yet. Beyond the fact that it lessens eye strain, a darker theme is just automatically cooler and edgier. Google has long realized this presumably, but it just made things official for the Google Search app.

Dark mode has actually been around for quite some time now (in beta), but now the search giant has finally rolled out the feature to all users, allowing them to choose between a light and dark theme.

Of course, only the newer versions of Android and iOS will be blessed with the dark mode feature, for reasons fairly obvious. So if you haven't yet, get yourself an iOS 13 or Android to enjoy Google's latest offering. Once you have these operating systems, the rest of the process should be fairly simple.

We should probably mention that the dark mode update is more than just a regular theme for the Google Search app. It's actually smart enough to detect the display settings of your device and switch it to the mode that suits the theme of your device best.

It's a cool feature, one that will presumably only happen on the most up-to-date software. If you got an older version, you'd most likely have to switch between dark and light mode. But that shouldn't bother you, considering you'll only need a few taps to do so.

Google first introduced the dark mode feature in Chrome version 74. The company eventually decided to make a dedicated themes section in the browser, and they also added a feature flag to render all web content using a dark theme.

While you can have your Google search results all in black, doing so can make some websites rather odd and difficult to navigate, especially if they haven't been designed with dark background colors considered.

This dark mode feature found in the app, however, works quite differently -- you'll be able to show darkened search page results as long as Chrome's dark mode is enabled. And since Chrome's dark mode can be set to sync with the "system default" theme, that means the darkened search results can sync with Android 10's system-wide dark mode toggle.

Overall, this is one cool addition to the Google Search app. Now you can enjoy your device in dark mode without your eyes burning. But if it doesn't suit your taste, you can always turn off dark mode manually.
