Netflix has already renewed The Crown season 5, but it won't be arriving this year or next year on the streaming service. Since the fourth installment is yet to be released on the platform, it only makes sense the fifth season is not coming anytime soon, as well.

Recently, Deadline reported that The Crown season 5 will premiere on Netflix at some point in 2022. The series takes a filming break this year and it will not, reportedly, start until June 2021. That means the streaming platform won't have any new episodes of one of its highest-profile shows next year.

Filming break has been a part of the series, so it is not something related to the current global health crisis. In fact, there's also a two-year gap between the second and the third season, wherein Claire Foy stepped away from the throne and Olivia Colman took over her place.

The news regarding the premiere of The Crown season 5 also comes after Imelda Staunton was cast as the latest Queen Elizabeth II. Lesley Manville is also confirmed to be part of the series as Princess Margaret. Netflix has yet to release other casting news in the coming weeks and months.

Meanwhile, the fourth installment is set until 1990 when Margaret Thatcher (played by Gillian Anderson) was ousted as Prime Minister. Princess Diana will also have a pivotal role here (Emma Corrin), in which she married Prince Charles (Josh O'Connor) in 1981.

The series managed to wrap up its fourth installment before the global health crisis hits the globe in March. Although there are still uncertainties at the moment, the new season may premiere later this year, with some speculating it will be released during the holiday season.

The good news is that The Crown season 5 will not be the final installment of the series. Originally, the plan was to have a total of 6 seasons for the series, but it was trimmed down to five. But, then, they have decided to expand it again and make the sixth installment as the series finale.

In January, Netflix announced that The Crown season 5 will the final one. However, series creator Peter Morgan changed the decision earlier this month. While it's confusing, many were delighted to see more of Queen Elizabeth's life. Since the fifth installment will start filming next year, the series finale will likely shoot in 2022 and might be released the following year.
