Meghan Markle is reportedly calling strangers on the phone to talk about the upcoming U.S. presidential elections. Activist and feminist icon Gloria Steinem confirmed that the Duchess of Sussex has been urging Americans to vote and make their voices heard in November.

Steinem told Access Hollywood that one of the reasons Meghan returned to California is so she could vote in the elections. Meghan shared this personal detail to her when they got together in person over the summer.

Meghan even enlisted Steinem to cold-call Americans to remind them of voting in the elections. The feminist leader said that they sat down together at her dining room, each making calls to strangers.

Steinem said that Meghan has a stereotype hanging over her head as a "princess" but the person she had the pleasure of meeting was "smart, authentic, funny and political." The icon said that Meghan has become such an inspiration to her.

During their one-on-one talk, which was also shared on the internet for the MAKERS initative, both Steinem and the duchess said they are excited for Kamala Harris' vice presidential candidacy. She will become the first woman in the position, should she win the elections but her victory will also be a big deal for representation of Black and South Asian Americans. Meghan said that this makes her hopeful as a biracial woman because she knows the feeling of seeing someone "looking like her" as a role model.

The Duchess of Sussex also expressed that people who do not exercise their right to vote are complicit to the problems facing the world today, both in the physical and digital world. She said that it's important, especially for women, to make their voices heard by putting their choices in the ballot. Meghan explained that one voice will still matter if every American will collectively do what they have to do in this election.

Meghan's comments and activities regarding the U.S. presidential elections received much criticism from the British public because she has been carrying her royal title in recent summits and forums. Her critics said that members of the royal family are supposed to be apolitical.

When Meghan married Prince Harry in 2018, she tempered on expressing her politicial views. However, some people also came to her defense and said that the Duchess of Sussex is still American and has the right to express her opinion about the elections.

Since stepping back as a working member of the royal family, Meghan has also spoken about the Black Lives Matter movement and the death of George Floyd. Her husband, on the other hand, expressed needed changes in the Commonwealth, led by Queen Elizabeth.
