Legacies season 3 is not arriving until next year on The CW. There are only a few details about the upcoming installment. The previous season was cut short since production was shut down earlier this year due to the current global health crisis.

The good thing is that we're getting some updates about the casting in Legacies season 3. In the latest report from TVLine, Leo Howard has been confirmed to be joining the rest as a series regular in the upcoming installment. He played the role of Ethan, a recurring character in season 2.

Ethan was first introduced as a student at the Mystic Falls High when Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) tried to blend in with everyone as a normal teenager. The character has a sister named Maya (Bianca Santos), and their mother is the new town sheriff, Mac (Bianca Kajlich).

Howard's promotion means that there is something more to his character. The new season could explore more of his life, particularly his past. Also, there's a possibility that other parts of the world will be introduced along the way. He might be hiding some secrets that yet to be uncovered.

As for what else we can expect, Legacies season 3 could bring back some notable The Vampire Diaries and The Originals characters. Although nothing is confirmed, this is something that executive producer Julie Plec hinted in the past.

Previously, Plec revealed that it would be great to bring back Mikael (Sebastian Roche) into the world as long as there's a right story for the character. He's one of the most dangerous characters and there's a lot of ways how to bring him back in the story.

In addition, Plec teased the likelihood of Caroline (Candice Accola) or Bonnie (Kat Graham) appearing in the new season. The executive producer noted these characters could be part of the story "maybe one day." For now, is no official confirmation that these three are appearing in the spin-off.

Meanwhile, Legacies season 3 will pick up the remaining events in the second installment. The previous season wasn't able to air all of its episodes as production was halted due to the coronavirus outbreak. The episode ended with Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) Hope in a dream-like state. The latter managed to infiltrate Josie's (Kaylee Bryant) mind to free her from dark impulses.

The release date of Legacies season 3 remains uncertain for now, but it is expected to premiere at some point in 2021.
