It is still a go for Johnnie Walker whiskey bottled in paper.
Johnnie Walker, one of the world's most popular Scotch brands, wants to be the world's first alcoholic beverage to be sold in environmentally friendly, paper-based bottles with no plastic.
Diageo plc, a British multinational that Johnnie Walker, announced paper containers in July. It said it planned to market a limited edition of Johnnie Walker in paper instead of glass in the first quarter of 2021.
Diageo calls the Johnnie Walker paper container "the world's first ever 100% plastic free paper-based spirits bottle made entirely from sustainably sourced wood." The company, however, didn't say which of its eight blends would be sold in the paper containers or in which countries.
"We're proud to have created this world first," Diageo's chief sustainability officer Ewan Andrew said.
"We are constantly striving to push the boundaries within sustainable packaging and this bottle has the potential to be truly groundbreaking. It feels fitting that we should launch it with Johnnie Walker, a brand that has often led the way in innovation throughout its 200 years' existence."
The paper containers will be produced from sustainably sourced wood pulp, Diageo said. The company is working with Pilot Lite to form Pulpex Ltd - the company that will make the containers.
The Johnnie Walker paper containers will be produced in different shapes for different products. Pulpex calls its paper container a "scalable paper-based bottle" with no plastic - unlike other "paper bottles" that have a plastic inner.
It said the Johnnie Walker container "is made from sustainably sourced pulp to meet food-safe standards and will be fully recyclable in standard waste streams."
Pulpex said the inside of the containers will be sprayed with a coating. It said the container will have a carbon footprint 90% lower than glass.
