BBC has yet to renew Sherlock Season 5, but fans remain hopeful that they will see Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and John H. Watson (Martin Freeman) back to the small screen. With the previous season's major cliffhanger, will showrunners Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss ever end the story?

It has been repeatedly said that the reason for Sherlock Season 5's delay is the jam-packed schedules of the persons involved. On their IMDb pages, Cumberbatch, Freeman, Moffat, and Gatiss all have impending works.

Sadly, the much-awaited TV series is not part of it. With their busy schedules, Devdiscourse noted the cast and crew fear they may create a subpar season by not putting their sole focus.

Add to that the COVID-19 pandemic, then the plan for a new season may have been possibly moved, too. The coronavirus doesn't just affect people's health but many industries and the economy as well.

In an earlier interview with Digital Spy, Moffat revealed he hadn't really thought about Sherlock Season 5 yet. Gatiss, too, was doing other things.

So, they hadn't had the chance to have a proper talk about doing another series. However, news emerged the two were looking into Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories for possible new season plotline.

If a new instalment pushes through, it may give light to Detective Inspector Stella Hopkins' (Eleanor Matsuura) story. After her introduction in Season 4, she was often seen visiting Baker Street and sending "a notion to assist" Sherlock.

However, the show had yet to end her plot. Also, Louise Brealey, who played the role of Molly Hooper, teased her return to Sherlock Season 5.

Express added the new season might have continued where the previous season left off. Eura Holmes (Sian Brooke) was safely back in her secure unit after the Season 4 finale revealed she's an expert manipulator who was fond of making fun of her brother.

Also, Sherlock learned how she killed her best friend, Redbeard, as a child. The famed detective had remembered the entire story very differently all those years.

Sherlock and Watsons remain to be great companions at the end of Season 4. So, the two, along with Eura, may have their own storylines in Sherlock Season 5.

In addition, Moffat and Gatiss have both shown some interests in the Red-Headed League storyline, where Professor Moriarty (Andrew Scott) tries to rob a bank. If ever Sherlock Season 5, this may also be at play. But, fans shall only take these assumptions with a grain of salt as BBC has yet to confirm anything.
