Doctor Who season 13 is not arriving anytime soon on BBC. Despite the delay, fans can expect a lot of interesting stories once the series premieres. For instance, we're going to learn more about one of the most intriguing non-Doctor characters within the show.
In a recent report from Radio Times, Mandip Gill revealed during the New York Comic-Con that Doctor Who season 13 will further dive into her character's past. The actress plays Yaz, who's been going through a lot -- especially when it comes to her mental health.
In the previous season, Yaz dealt with her mental health issues, which almost derailed her life for years before she met the Doctor (Jodie Whittaker). Now, Gill confirmed that her character's mental health will continue to play out in the latest installment.
The actress revealed that executive producer Chris Chibnall called her and said they're going to delve into Yaz's backstory and her mental health issues. Gill noted that the idea of exploring the character's past opens her up to a load of things.
She said that she worked with the MIND charity and asked a lot of questions, including how people react in certain situations. Perhaps, for Yaz, there is a reason why she hadn't mentioned it running up to this. Also, there could be an explanation of why she'd gone with her sister and not her mother.
Gill added that she's glad to explore this part of Yaz in Doctor Who season 13. It will definitely affect her character's choices moving forward. Moreover, it seems like she'll be immediately put through the emotional wringer in the early run of the latest installment.
The actress revealed that Yaz will be in some distress in the festive special, "Revolution of the Daleks." The character is struggling a bit, given that the Doctor's imprisonment in the season 12 finale left her friends adrift. Gill said Yaz finds it difficult not to be able to say goodbye to the Doctor.
Meanwhile, some rumors suggest that Yaz could replace Whittaker's character in Doctor Who season 13. Since it's unknown how and when the latter will manage to escape her current situation, Yaz could step up and take over the role. Yet, the gang will also to whatever they can to get the Doctor back where she belongs.
Doctor Who season 13 has no official release date, but the upcoming Christmas special is expected to arrive later this year.
