Operations Manager Hetty Lange (Linda Hunt) will have a surprising role in the premiere of NCIS: Los Angeles season 12. While she plays a significant part in the team, she often stays and takes the backseat to the action. But now, it looks like she's out in the field and ready to show some of her skills.

Hunt has been a mainstay in the procedural drama since the second season, but fans don't often see her in action. However, the previously-released premiere photo of NCIS: Los Angeles season 12 teased that Hetty would be playing a different role this time around.

Usually, she is acting as the team's Q, directing them about their new missions and providing whatever they need. Now, one of the new photos featured Hetty's pivotal role in action scenes. She ditched her iconic sharp suits and wearing an army camouflage and bulletproof vest, instead.

In a new interview with TVLine, executive producer R. Scott Gemmill shared more details about Hetty's role in the premiere of NCIS: Los Angeles season 12. He hinted that the character's story in the first episode is mostly tied to Nell Jones (Renee Felice Smith).

Nell was last seen ready to resign but Hetty doesn't agree with the idea. Instead, she told her to take vacation days and think about what she really wanted to do. Gemmill explained that in the premiere episode, the former comes to speak with the latter, but finds out she isn't there.

The two will have a certain interaction in season opener. As the synopsis notes, Hetty gives Nell a "cryptic assignment." In fact, a new video teaser featured Smith's character at the center of everything. In the clip, Nell receives a message from Hunt's character.

She is confused as to where the Operations Manager could be. Through most of the premiere of NCIS: Los Angeles season 12, we're going to find out Hetty's whereabouts. The "cryptic assignment" may have something to do with why Hunt's character isn't where she exactly should be.

As for what else is coming, G. Callen (Chris O'Donnell) and Sam Hanna (LL Cool J) will go on a dangerous mission. The two go to the desert to track down a Russian bomber who went missing onboard a plane flying over the United States. They need to secure the weapons and inter from the bomber before other passengers could destroy them.

NCIS: Los Angeles season 12 will arrive on Sunday, Nov. 8, on CBS.
