The Walking Dead season 11 is the final installment of the AMC post-apocalyptic series, which runs in the network for more than a decade. Now, the executive producer of the show reveals the real reason why the hit zombie thriller is coming to an end.

Executive producer Scott M. Gimple shared why they decided to wrap up the story in The Walking Dead season 11. In a previous interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he confirmed that the decision to end the series comes down to AMC rather than himself or showrunner Angela Kang.

Gimple revealed that the conversation comes out with the network and made the call to conclude the show. He noted that "it's incredibly heavy" when he and Kang learned about the news. While the franchise has a future ahead, the decision to end the main series was a tough call for everyone.

Even though more spin-offs are coming down the road, the executive producer admitted that it's hard to say goodbye to a "significant period of his career." He noted that the weirdest thing about it is how everything went by so quickly and it doesn't feel like 10 or 11 years had passed.

Gimple began with his TV career as the creator of the animated series Fillmore!. However, he spent the last 10 years as the producer and key writer for the post-apocalyptic series. He concluded by saying it all went by "way, way, way too fast."

Meanwhile, The Walking Dead season 11 is back in production following a hiatus because of the coronavirus outbreak. But, while everyone returns to the set, there are still health guidelines and safety protocols that need to be followed.

Series star Norman Reedus shared his experiences working amidst the pandemic. The actor, who plays Dary, admitted that the intense action scenes have been "grueling" this year. They have to adjust to the new normal in order to keep everyone safe.

As for what stories are coming, fans speculated that The Walking Dead season 11 could bring an unexpected twist between Daryl and Maggie (Lauren Cohan). The latter, who's been missing since season 9, returned in the originally-billed season 10 finale.

Maggie reunited with Daryl, Carol (Melissa McBride), and others -- but also comes across Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). She holds a deep resentment for him after he killed her husband, Glenn (Steven Yeun). However, during her time away from the group, Negan evolved and becomes an ally.

Some fans suggested that Daryl could side with his Negan over his old friend, Maggie. If she seeks revenge, Reedus' character could come in between and will choose to defend the former antagonist. For now, however, viewers have to wait and see what the future holds for the three.

The Walking Dead season 11 is scheduled to premiere at some point in 2021.
