Gintama is about to be back both on the big and small screens. After announcing a new movie, Gintama: The Final Movie, an anime special is also set to be out.

Warner Bros. Japan dropped a short video that showed the official release date of the upcoming movie and TV special. Fans will first see the film on January 8, while the show will arrive on January 15.

The two Gintama projects are said to have a direct connection to each other. However, with the little information that the clip has, fans can hear Gintoki himself complaining.

He even said the upcoming film, which is billed as the finale of the franchise, is just another scam to hype the movie, Anime News Network noted. So, what does Gintama: The Final Movie entail?

According to AsapLand, the movie will pick-up the final events that the manga left off. It will feature new story elements, along with some unedited scenes, specially created for the animated transposition.

Written and illustrated by Hideaki Sorachi, Gintama is a science-fiction period-drama comedy manga that started in 2003 and ended in 2019 with over 55 million copies in circulation. Its anime, on the other hand, began in 2005 and concluded in 2018.

Aside from the anime, the manga gave birth to different branches, like several original video anime (OVA), event anime, live-action films, and live-action net spinoffs. With its success, Viz Media published its first 23 volumes in English.

The first 49 episodes of its first TV series started streaming on Hulu with an English dub in December. Alternatively, Sentai Filmworks released the anime's 49 episodes on DVD in 2010 and 2011 without English dub.

Meanwhile, in celebration of Gintoki's birthday in October, the full trailer of the Gintama: The Final Movie was released, per Otakumode. It showed the film's soundtrack, "Wadawi," by the rock band Spyair.

This band has been a frequent collaborator of the Gintama franchise. They have made the official soundtracks of its anime series thrice and its previous movie.

The upcoming film will also feature an insert song from another rock band, DOES, who has worked on the TV anime's theme songs.

Gintama follows the story of the samurai Gintoki and his friends, Shinpachi and Kagura. The three are struggling to pay their rent while living in the alternate Edo period when aliens are busy invading the earth.
