The Expanse season 5 is officially premiering next week on Amazon Prime Video after being on hiatus for a year. A lot of fans were delighted to see the sci-fi drama coming back, especially since the previous installment left a lot of stories open.

Ahead of its release, the streaming platform has been dropping updates about what's coming in The Expanse season 5. For instance, the recently-released sneak peek featured Naomi Nagata (Dominique Tipper) searching for her son, Filip (Jasai Chase Owens).

Now that she has clues regarding his whereabouts, she'll do whatever she can to reunite with him. James Holden (Steven Strait) is willing to offer a hand and help her in locating Filip. In fact, he wants to accompany Naomi on this particular mission.

The biggest problem, however, is that Naomi is reluctant in bringing Holden with her. It looks like she wants to find her son on her own, not needing the help of others. The major concern for both of them is Marco Inaros (Keon Alexander). He is dangerous, and there could be a problem if he finds Filip.

Marco is going to be a Big Bad in The Expanse season 5. He seems to be doing something that could lead to chaos later on. The upcoming installment is all about politics, as well as allegiances. And while trying to find peace, new threats are coming on the way.

In another sneak peek, Amos Burton (Wes Chatham) and Chrisjen Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo) can be seen having a small chat. The latter doesn't look pleased with what's currently happening around them, and the former noted that they have "very-different backgrounds."

Then, their conversation shifted when Amos called Chrisjen "Chrissy." She made it clear that she doesn't want to be called that way, but he still used that. Viewers will still see some fun moments with some characters, despite the troubles ahead of them.

Meanwhile, there is no need to worry as The Expanse season 5 won't be the final one. In November, it was confirmed that a sixth season is coming and it will series finale of the sci-fi. One particular character is not coming back in the final outing.

Cas Anvar won't be reprising his Alex Kamal role in the final installment. He's been part of the series since the first season. Reportedly, one of the major reasons why he's not coming back is because he was subjected to sexual allegations, leading to an internal investigation.

The Expanse season 5 premieres on Wednesday, Dec. 16, on Amazon Prime Video.
