Big things are happening for Tom Holland. The young actor is still working on Spider-Man 3 right now but it looks like he already has his next project in the pipeline. A new report confirms that Spider-Man 4 is already in development and could be filmed immediately after Holland wraps up on the still-untitled third movie.
It's no secret that the future of Spider-Man was previously in peril when Sony Pictures and Disney failed to make a deal on producing a third film. This led to Sony pulling the character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and announcing that Spider-Man will only appear in standalone movies produced by the studio.
This was sad news for fans who were hoping to see more of Tom Holland's Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Luckily, Sony Pictures and Disney were able to renegotiate and it was confirmed that Holland would star in another Spider-Man flick set in the MCU.
But is it possible that the deal actually included a fourth film? A new report from Mail Online shared some images taken from the set of Spider-Man 3 in Atlanta. Interestingly, the report also included a small note about what is happening in the future.
"A fourth film in the franchise is reportedly in development," the report reads. This immediately led to speculations that Spider-Man 4 will begin production soon after the third movie.
So when exactly can fans expect to see Spider-Man 4? Although it is already being developed, production might not start right away due to director Jon Watts' schedule.
Jon Watts has directed the first two Spider-Man movies and is currently working on Spider-Man 3. In addition to that, it was confirmed during Disney Investor Day that Watts will helm the Fantastic Four film set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Although the Fantastic Four movie has not yet been given an official release date, it was confirmed to be in active development. This means it could be Jon Watts' next project after Spider-Man 3. With that in mind, the filmmaker could only begin working on Spider-Man 4 after he completes the Fantastic Four reboot.
There is also a possibility that Marvel Studios will hire a different director to work on Spider-Man 4. On the other hand, there is a huge chance that they will stick with Jon Watts and delay the production of the fourth Spider-Man film.
Spider-Man 3 is currently in production. It is scheduled for release on December 17, 2021.
