Daisuke Higuchi is now back to continue Whistle! W or aka Whistle Double. After the female manga artist went on a hiatus in April 2019, she is now ready to continue Tenjou Kouga and Kurose Takumi's story.
Whistle Double has already resumed its publication this week after almost two years of hiatus. Higuchi announced she would go on a break in 2019 due to some health reasons.
According to Spoiler Guy, the break went on for two years because the author, who is often mistaken for a man because of her name, took her time to "recover and recharge." Now that she seems more vitalized, she is ready to face the world and work again.
The manga tells the story of two soccer boys whose passion and dedication towards soccer are beyond palpable. Tenjou is a sixth-grade student at Musashinomori elementary school.
He holds an incredible sense in soccer. However, things will change when the soccer genius Kurose transferred to his school and ignited a new passion for soccer inside him.
Knowing Tenjou comes from a good family, and whose father is a famous soccer player himself, it is no surprise that he also loves the said sports. On the other hand, Kurose experiences hardship and struggle in life. Though these two have opposite lives, their shared interest will lead them to the same path.
Whistle Double was first launched in the Ura Sunday manga magazine and Manga One in September 2016. Before Higuchi went on a hiatus, she managed to publish its fourth compiled book volume in January 2019, Anime News Network noted.
It was then serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 1998 to 2002. The magazine had released a total of 24 compiled book volumes.
On the other hand, Viz Media dropped all of its 14 volumes from 2004 to 2010. The manga was also adapted into an anime in 2002, receiving 39 episodes that ended in 2003.
Whistle Double has a digital version that came out from 2013 to 2014. It was also adapted into a stage play in 2016.
In addition, after Higuchi announced her hiatus, she still managed to publish a full-color special chapter, called Extra Stage Shuppatsu, as part of her Whistle! manga series on Shueisha's Shonen Jump+. It featured a tale about the Sakura Josui team, which won a popularity vote during the You Got Your Wish 20th anniversary event in May 2018.
