Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle were never close as sisters-in-law and they have not spoken to each other directly for more than a year unlike Prince William and Harry who have at least communicated "sparingly."

A source told Us Weekly that Kate and Meghan have been distant since the rift between William and Harry. However, the dukes have been communicating under friendly premises since the Sussexes left for the U.S. but the animosity between Kate and Meghan has remained.

The insider added that Kate and Meghan got along so well in the beginning. They began to clash when they started working together inside Kensington Palace and didn't see eye-to-eye on a lot of things.

Meghan said that the Palace had a different standard for her and for Kate. She claimed that the courtiers encouraged the hero vs villain narrative in the press, and she always came out looking bad to the public.

The Duchess of Sussex said in the Oprah Winfrey interview that she was hoping people would not hate on her if they love Kate and vice versa. The source implied, however, that Kate did not know the extent of Meghan's struggles within the royal walls and now wished that she knew more.

According to royal expert Robert Jobson, the duchess' relationship might never heal. He likened their relationship to sisters-in-law, Wallis Simpson, the wife of King Edward VII who abdicated, and the Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth's mother.

Jobson said that when Kate becomes the Queen Consort, her relationship with Meghan will be much like this dynamic between the older royals. The royal expert also said that Meghan will likely avoid royal events because she would not like to sit in the same table as the royals. Jobson said she would not have done the interview if she wanted to make peace.

Finding Freedom authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand wrote that in the biography that Kate and Meghan do not have a lot of things in common, hence they are not the best of friends. The royal biographers said that while they are not feuding, they never got the chance to know each other well and that Kate did not make any efforts to become close to her sister-in-law.

Scobie and Durand said that Meghan was disappointed that her relationship with Kate didn't progress but she's also not losing sleep over it. The authors also said that Meghan did not get emotional support from Kate, even if the Duchess of Cambridge was thoughtful with flowers.
