The Cody Boys will be living in a new era in the upcoming Animal Kingdom season 5. They must rebuild their empire after the death of Smurf (Ellen Barkin). However, it remains to be seen who will lead their operation this time around, though previous teasers hint J (Finn Cole) becoming the leader.

Recently, the official Twitter account of the series dropped a teaser focusing on J possibly taking over Smurf's position in Animal Kingdom season 5. Unlike the other Cody Boys, the character seems to be the top candidate in leading their criminal empire.

In the 10-second clip, J can be heard saying about getting the things that they want -- but not the things that they deserve. Considering the nature of their operation, it is unlikely that they'll get everything. They commit crimes for a living and their dangerous job comes at a high price.

J looks determined to continue what Smurf has started. However, other Cody Boys -- Pope (Shawn Hatosy), Craig (Ben Robson), and Deran (Jake Weary) -- aren't entirely open with the idea that Cole's character is leading them. This could cause a huge conflict for all of them as they compete for the spot.

The early run of Animal Kingdom season 5 may see the four of them adjusting and agreeing on certain things. But then, some outside forces may bring troubles for them and a power struggle is going to be one of their major sources of conflict. The Cody Boys may turn their backs on each other at some point.

Apart from this storyline, Smurf remains part of the story despite her death in the fourth installment. A younger version of the character will be featured, confirming that her past will be addressed. Her backstory is going to explore different parts of her life, as well as the people in her life before.

In fact, Anthony Konechny has been confirmed to part of Animal Kingdom season 5. The actor is set to play the younger version of Denis Leary's Billy. He is Deran's estranged father and a huge part of Smurf's past. It'll tackle how they first met and why they eventually separated.

Animal Kingdom season 5 official premiere date has not been set as of this writing but it is expected to arrive sometime in summer 2021. Also, the upcoming installment won't be the final one as TNT renewed the series for a sixth installment, which will serve as the series finale.
