Animal Kingdom season 6 has been officially renewed on TNT even though the fifth installment is yet to be released sometime in 2021. This is good news for the fans as they're going to see more of the Cody Boys moving forward. The bad news, however, is that the sixth outing would be the final one.
In the latest report from Deadline, it was confirmed that Animal Kingdom season 6 will serve as the series finale. The renewal was announced just recently, with the cast and crew eyeing to kick off production of the final installment in February.
Animal Kingdom season 6 will wrap up all the storyline and questions hanging up in the air since the beginning. But, for now, the focus is on the premiere of the fifth installment. Reportedly, production concluded in 2020, but the official premiere date hasn't been set.
Fans have been waiting for the arrival of season 5 since the series has been on hiatus for several months already. Yet, even though there have been a lot of setbacks, TNT has been sharing updates on what lies ahead for the Cody family in the fifth installment.
According to the official synopsis, the Cody Boys -- Pope (Shawn Hatosy), Craig (Ben Robson), Deran (Jake Weary), and J (Finn Cole) -- deal with the fallout from the events surrounding the death of Smurf (Ellen Barkin). The latter leads their operation, and everything changes now that she's gone.
The Codys are struggling to maintain their kingdom without a leader, as well as keeping a fragile alliance. Their biggest challenge is to figure out who among them will come out on top and take over Smurf's position. At the same time, the need to find more information about Pamela Johnson (Milauna Jackson).
Smurf made Pamela the beneficiary of her estate, and there are a lot of questions surrounding it. Also, the fifth season will further explore Smurf's past -- even diving back to her life in 1984 when she was still the increasingly "volatile 29-year-old Smurf."
Some people from her past will emerge, as well. For instance, the young version of Denis Leary's Billy shows up at some point. This person has a significant connection to Smurf, as he's the estranged father of Deran. While some stories will be given a conclusion, most of the events will continue in Animal Kingdom season 6.
The fifth outing is expected to come out in summer 2021, while Animal Kingdom season 6 may come out in 2022.
